Using Share Markup in SOLIDWORKS
View transcript
Let's explore the new Share and Markup functionality included with the SOLIDWORKS Cloud Services. To use the Share and Markup functionality, you need the latest SOLIDWORKS Service Pack and 3DEXPERIENCE platform update. It's easy to share SOLIDWORKS files between users on the platform and in SOLIDWORKS. You can simply click share a file on the Lifecycle and Collaboration tab on the toolbar or assign it to a keyboard shortcut and even use it as a mouse gesture. Behind the scenes, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform will automatically create a shareable link for the file and upload it to your own personal 3DDrive. This link can be copied and access can be restricted to specific users by email addresses. You can also allow guest comments and add a short message if required. Clicking share will send an email to the recipient and activate the link for access. Your SOLIDWORKS Session updates to show you which files you've shared and if you wish to revoke access. Let's switch over to the recipient’s screen to understand what they'll see. The recipient will receive an email like this, including the comments from the sender and a link to access the file in a 3D viewer. By clicking the link, we'll be asked to log in with our 3DEXPERIENCE ID to access and view the file here. This log in is simply the free 3DEXPERIENCE ID login and does not require any paid licenses or additional software. And as this is browser based, we can access the files on any device. With the simple and intuitive tools, we'll add a markup for the designer to review. On the Tools tab, we can highlight areas with the pencil tool and add annotations with the text tool. We could add a simple text comment to the file with the comment button along the top of the screen or, using the Share as Comment feature along the bottom toolbar, we can include a screenshot of our markup with our comment. Let's return to our initial sender working in SOLIDWORKS. They'll receive an instant notification about the comment. Clicking on the notification will load up the markup alongside the SOLIDWORKS part in the MySession window. To view the markup, we need to click on the screenshot included with the comment to create an engaging markup. A review could add multiple comments like this to act as a slideshow showing the modifications for review. And once we've made the required changes, we can simply click share file again and we'll be asked whether we want to upload new file or just update the existing file. Updating the existing file will preserve all of the previous comments for complete historical traceability. Share and markup is a simple but powerful tool to assist you when designing in SOLIDWORKS.
