A set of data that describes
and gives information about other data
captured
within file cards in PDM has many uses.
It can be displayed
in configurable explorer columns for easy
browsing, is searchable
via quick search or custom search cards.
It can be structured
within a bill of materials
for documenting
and sharing your desired data,
or simply just synchronized
withdrawing border notes.
However, historical
or changing working practices
can mean the imported data
may not have wholly accurate
or usable data.
Using the Data Card Variable Update Tool,
I will demonstrate
how you can quickly apply mass
updates to the files within your vault.
The tool uses an Excel spreadsheet
as its input, and in PDM professional.
We can quickly create
this by running a search.
In my
example, I've returned
the contents of a specific folder,
and the associated column set contains
all the variables
I wanted to validate.
After clicking the open as CSV button,
I could start to manipulate the text,
inserting missing values
and changing those that I needed to modify
or correct.
Once complete,
I will save the edited CSV file
as a standard
Excel document, in this case
directly into a subfolder of the data card
updater application,
overwriting the sample file
already in there
Launching the Data Code
variable update tool,
we first confirm that the source
Excel file
and the correct vault is selected.
We enter or update the login credentials
for a user
with checkout rights on all the data
that you are processing.
Then set our preferred options.
In my case, I'm processing files.
I want to overwrite the existing version
instead of creating a new version,
and I want the variables to be consistent
across all configurations.
Once happy,
I click start
and the tool processed the files, noting
that any errors would have been reported
in the console
using the same search criteria as before.
I rerun the search
and we can see the changes reflected
in the original script, saving us
lots of time on this off laborious task.
