What is SOLIDWORKS CAM?

January 15, 2026

Solidworks CAM is a feature‑based machining system that automatically recognises holes, pockets and perimeters from a 3D model to generate toolpaths. It guides new users through operation planning and toolpath creation, incorporating PMI data to apply tolerances and surface finishes without drawings. Toolpaths are driven by a technology database that considers material, geometry and feature type for customised machining strategies. The standard version supports 2.5‑axis machining, while the professional version adds 5‑axis positional, turning and volume‑mill capabilities, with the option to scale up to full CAMWorks for advanced multi‑axis requirements.
