Importing a DWG or DXF file into SOLIDWORKS

January 15, 2026

Bringing a DWG or DXF file into SOLIDWORKS begins with choosing whether to create a drawing or import the geometry as a 2D sketch. You can set units, import dimensions, select layers and repair sketch issues before bringing the data in. Once imported, the sketch can be aligned to the origin and assigned to front, top and right orientations for accurate 3D modelling. These sketches drive extrudes, cuts and other features to build the solid model. Materials and mass properties can be applied, and sheet‑metal parts can be unfolded and exported back to DXF or DWG for manufacture.
