Formula Student - Part 3 - Chassis Simulation

October 30, 2025

The video demonstrates how SOLIDWORKS Simulation is used to evaluate a Formula Student chassis under torsional and vertical loading. Weldment geometry is automatically converted into 1D beam elements, enabling fast meshing and efficient structural analysis. Material assignment, beam joints, bonded contacts and selective exclusion of non‑load‑bearing bodies streamline setup. Fixtures are applied at suspension nodes using reference geometry to constrain translations while allowing rotation. Opposing vertical forces simulate twisting about the chassis centreline, with gravity included for self‑weight. Results show stress distribution, displacement, torsional rigidity and individual beam forces, with tools to probe, animate and export data for design comparison and optimisation.
