So starting with the most popular workstation in Dell's range, the precision 3660, when this model range first launched, it was termed entry level. However, the precision 3000 series quickly became the top seller and the best option for CAD use in 2023. The specifications and performance are far from entry level with incredibly powerful CPU and graphics cards available For 2023 The model number hasn't changed, but on the inside there are some big upgrades. First is Intel's 13th generation core CPUs. Again, they're using the Intel hybrid architecture of performance and efficiency cores to manage background tasks and assist with heavily multi-threaded workloads. The three main updates are the high performance power cores. Get a new architecture delivering more performance per gigahertz. Maximum speeds are also higher now up to 5.8 gigahertz. For single threaded workloads, the number of cores goes from 16 to 24, made up of a maximum of eight performance and 16 efficiency cores on the inside as per 2022, we have options for air or liquid cooling to tame those ever powerful cpu's. Our recommendation is for the advanced air cooling as while in our tests the liquid cooling offered marginally better performance. The air cooling option was a better balance of performance and noise in an office environment. There are also four dimm slots available for up to 128 gigabytes of ddr5 RAM with support for ECC RAM. Originally designed for critical data center applications, correcting for random flipped bit errors that occur naturally in all computers Dell workstations also build upon this with their proprietary reliable memory technology which can isolate faulty areas to avoid further errors on the same small segment of the RAM chip and even recommend proactive RAM replacement when the errors reach a critical level. On the graphics side, there is support for up to one double width professional graphics card. As of June 2023, these are largely the same as 2022. However, coming later this summer is support for the new RTX 6048 gigabyte Ada generation graphics card. while this monster of a graphics card with a list price of over $8,000 might be hard to justify for CAD For GPU based rendering tools such as SolidWorks, Visualize and Dassault XFlow fluid dynamics, it can offer a great return on investment. The precision 3660 has been the clear leader for CAD in the precision range for over a year and 2023 makes it even better. However, with two new releases of Dell Precision Workstations launched in 2023, we'll also explore the suitability for engineering workflows, including performance benchmark results, to see if the precision 3660 retains its crown. Plus our website is always up to date with the latest workstation specifications. We recommend.
